Makalu Base Camp a three-week trek form Hile up the Arun valley and over the Shipton La (4127,) requires a tent and food for then days the last teachouse is at Tashi Gaun less than a day beyond where the trail leaves the Arun. Much of this trek passes through the wild and remote Makalu Barun National Park and the contiguous Makalu Barun Conservation Area which forms a protective buffer zone in the inhabited area to the south and east of Nepal. Established in 1992 the park is intended to stem the growing human pressure around the base-camp area and preserve what is regarded as one of the most biologically diverse areas in the Himalays. the conservation area, meanwhile is supposed to be modelled on the Annapurna Conservation Area Project and operate on similar principles of involving locals in conservation.
